Check the statement against the ID. For veteran families, check the proof of service matches the poster (or their late spouse or family member) before ticking the veteran box. Call the creditor at a number you look up yourself to confirm the account, the payoff amount and how they take payments. Never trust a payment link or phone number from the poster without checking it.
Approving a pledge sends the creditor details to that donor. Confirm the donor is who they say they are first.
Check that the paid-in-full letter comes from the creditor and matches the account.
